The social giant has confirmed that starting March 31, BlackBerry users will have to make a mandatory update to the Facebook app for BlackBerry, which will remove a number of features from the app. “The current BlackBerry Facebook application will cease to work on BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS versions 7.1 and earlier,” notes the BlackBerry support page.
BlackBerry explains that native Facebook apps on Android and iOS use a private API not available for general use, and that this will no longer be available for BlackBerry. BlackBerry users who want to continue using Facebook, however, can upgrade to the web experience.
The Support page further lists some of the features that will be lost with the updated version of the app include BlackBerry 10 Facebook Contacts Sync, which will no longer sync with the Contacts app on the device; BlackBerry Hub integration, messages / chat, posts, friend requests, games, invitations and other notifications will no longer show as entries in BlackBerry Hub.
Additionally, BlackBerry 10 users will no longer be able to share images or videos directly to Facebook using the Share icon.
BlackBerry expressed disappointment with the withdrawal of support from Facebook as well as WhatsApp, which is also an instant messaging application owned by Facebook.
In a blog post, BlackBerry said, “We are extremely disappointed with their decision because we know that so many users love these apps. We fought to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change our minds, but for now their decision stands. worked hard to ensure that our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and continue to seek alternative solutions. “
