It has been over two years since BlackBerry shipped a handset running its own operating system. The last handset powered by the BB10 operating system came out in 2015. The company has been making devices running Android and will no longer revert to its own operating system. Those who still own a BB10 OS device would be interested to know that BlackBerry has decided to close the BlackBerry World app store in December 2019.
BlackBerry has confirmed, however, that it will continue to provide software support for BB10 and BBOS devices for at least two years.
In the meantime, some ancillary services will be closed. The BlackBerry Travel site will bite the dust in February next year while the Playbook video calling service will be shut down in March 2018.
The BlackBerry World app store will close on December 31, 2019. This means that as we approach 2020, those with a BB10 or BBOS handset will have no official way to install an app on their handsets.
BlackBerry calls on holdouts to switch to a new Android device from BlackBerry Mobile. These include the BlackBerry Motion and the BlackBerry KeyOne.
The company said it was working with BlackBerry Mobile to offer holdouts a trade-in program that will give them a “big discount” to get them to upgrade their current BlackBerry device to a new Android device.
