BlackBerry OS 7 announced, older devices not supported

What was rumored to be BlackBerry OS 6.1 was officially announced as OS 7 because RIM felt the improvements were too big for a simple 0.1 update. Bad news for older devices – they won’t be part of the action.

BlackBerry OS 7 will launch with BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Bold 9930 (aka the Bold Touches) devices and arrays that predated these two will not be updated to OS v7, not even those running version 6. .

BlackBerry OS 7 incorporates BlackBerry Balance, which separates personal and corporate data on the same device. It can be configured to, for example, only erase company data on the phone or to prevent personal apps from accessing company files (for example, you cannot attach a company file to an e -personal email).

The BlackBerry Browser also received major enhancements with OS 7. New graphics and JavaScript engines speed up pages and allow smooth panning and zooming. Support for HTML5 video has also been added.

Universal search introduced in BlackBerry OS version 6 also works with voice queries. In addition, BlackBerry OS 7 comes with Docs To Go and for the Bold 9900 and Bold 9300 at least, all the premium features of the app will be activated out of the box.

By the way, BlackBerry OS 7 is not based on QNX (like PlayBook OS is), so we don’t expect to see apps from one running on top of the other (similar to iPhone apps). on iPad).
