BlackBerry updated its Twitter app today bringing new image tweaks and inline tweet details to all versions of the mobile platform still in common use.
The app is available for download now from BlackBerry World and will work on BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 5.0 through BlackBerry 7.0, the company said. There is of course a version already available for BlackBerry 10 which largely includes the same set of features.
The new version (Twitter 4.2) brings changes to images, such as support for photo cards, new retweet and favorite tweets indicators, and additional timeline details such as who replied to your tweets, where they are, and where. whether an article summary is available.
BlackBerry’s Twitter application was first released in 2010, but it lacked the more sophisticated features offered by native apps on other platforms and the web client until today’s update.
Updating basic apps like this can only strengthen its case with consumers and at least reassure some that it is committed to keeping owners of old handsets, as well as newer, up to date. However, critics will point out that the number of apps on the BlackBerry World app store is much lower than its rival platforms, especially when you consider only those intended for its new BlackBerry operating system. 10 and excluding the direct ports of the Android operating system.
The company, which only launched the most recent full version of its operating system – BlackBerry 10 – in January of this year has a long way to go in the mobile space, especially with consumers. While iPhone and Android device sales dominate the headlines, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform and BlackBerry 10 are currently battling for third place. Since the platform’s launch, it has introduced a high-end Z10 device, a Qwerty-equipped Q10, and announced a mid-range Q5 device with a Qwerty keyboard which has yet to go on sale.
