If you still have an old BlackBerry, it’s time to upgrade it. BlackBerry OS software and services have stopped.

BlackBerry phones have pioneered the mobile business movement. Today, in an ironic twist of fate, the company has permanently retired the original software suite from BlackBerry.

This development was touted as a security measure, a rebranding effort that many see as a huge step towards a much more modern BlackBerry overall.

Legacy service for the original BlackBerry OS officially finished on January 4, 2022.

Although the news came as a shock to the few remaining users of the platform, the vast majority of current BlackBerry customers will not have noticed any difference after the day has come – current BlackBerry phones now run Android, plain and simple, and that since 2016. .

If you are still clinging helplessly to a BlackBerry device that uses the BlackBerry 7.1 operating system or earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, or BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 or earlier, you can no longer reliably use the phone through the Wi-Fi or carrier data.

User service has also ended for the following BlackBerry device apps and features:

  • Enhanced Simulation Based License (ESBL)
  • Identity-Based Licensing (IBL)
  • Email addresses hosted by BlackBerry
  • BlackBerry Link
  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  • BlackBerry Blend
  • BlackBerry Protect (this change will not impact the new BlackBerry Protect, of course)

A word of warning for those who still regularly rely on their BlackBerry device in the field: calls, texts, mobile data service and even mobile emergency service calls no longer work reliably.
